Strategy for Chemistry Paper-1

I have secured 391 (200 + 191) in Chemistry in CSE 2009. I had 310 in CSE 2007 and 305 in CSE2006. The improvement that I made was primarily in Chemistry Paper-2, in which I had 134 and 133 marks in last two attempts. In this attempt I focused more on paper–2 of Chemistry and luckily it gave me dividends…For Paper-2, I have already enumerated the reading list. Now I will give topic wise reading list for Chemistry Paper-1.

The books that I referred were following:

  1. Physical Chemistry : Atkins (8th Edition)
  2. Physical Chemistry : Alberty and Silbey
  3. Physical Chemistry: Castellan
  4. Physical Chemistry : K.L.Kapoor ( all 5 volumes)
  5. Physical Chemistry: Puri, Sharma and Pathania (PSP)
  6. Chemical Kinetics: Laider
  7. Physical Chemistry of Surfaces: ARTHUR W. ADAMSON
  8. Inorganic Chemistry :Principles of Structure & Reactivity, Huheey, Keiter & Keiter(4th Edition)
  1. Advanced Inorganic Chemistry : Cotton and Wilkinson
  2. Selected Topics in Inorganic Chemistry: Tuli and Madan
  3. Inorganic Chemistry : Puri Sharma and Kalia (PSK)
  4. Inorganic Chemistry: Meissler and Tarr
  5. Inorganic Chemistry : J.D.Lee

One thing I would like to make it clear that it is not required to read all these books from cover to cover...some of them are main books (like PSP, Atkins, Huheey) where as some are reference books…..

For the major topics of Chemistry paper-1, I relied heavily on the notes of Mr.R.K.Singh (earlier faculty of Chemistry at DIAS coaching, Delhi), which were made from Brilliant’s notes and Puri Sharma, & Pathania. I kept on adding new topics and improving older topics by consulting a no of foreign author’s books. First thing before start of any chapter is to make a topics wise list of all the previous year’s questions (not only 10 year, but almost all questions of last 20-25 years) of Civil Service Exam and Indian Forest Service Exam [IFS](for which the papers are available for last 10 years). This will enable you to know about the kind of questions that are being asked from a particular chapter...Next thing is to prepare each topic thoroughly keeping the previous year’s questions in mind…In chemistry paper-I prepare all the 15 topics, but some of the topics may be prepared at a very basic level like Bio-inorganic Chemistry, Main Group Chemistry.

The idea of completeness of the preparation is that "one should be able to write a good answer on any of the topic given in the syllabus and should be able to answer any of the previous year's question of CSE and IFS"...

Now lets us discuss chapter wise references for the Chemistry Paper-1:

Mr Bombay....regarding the books in Physics,i am in the process of writing a blog....
For the topic of continuous media, please refer to Mechanics by D.S.Mathur and Mechanics by B.S.Agrawal...
The syllabus of IFS and IAS in Physics is different...in IFS they have still the old syllabus....do
Waves from N.K.Bajaj & B.S.Agarwal...
For thermal Physics refer Sears and Salinger also....
For Quantum mechanics, my stratrgy was to cover as many books as i can.... so that none of the questions in the exam is new to us..Quantum Mechanics, refer the Griffith + H.C.Verma + Zetili+ Ghata and solve all the questions of the st books....
For Nuclear, i covered all the topics in great detail and prepared all the topics covering a lot of books, I consulted the followings books:
1.Resnick and Eisberg
2.Nuclear Physics: S.B.Patel
3.Nuclear Physics: D.C.Tayal
4.Nuclear Physics: Pandya & Yadav
5.Nuclear Physics: S.N.Ghoshal

which book should one start reading coordination from ? huhhey or miesller tarr? could u please make a suggestion...thanks

Abhijeet Agrawal said...

To Alvin...
Coordination chemistry will require references from a range of books...but for the start u refer to J.D.Lee, Huheey and then prepare various topics from other reference books...u dont have to read any of the book from cover to cover....best strategy would be to prepare a write up on each topic of the syllabus...

Hey Abhijeet, which books are like the indispensable ones for physical? Wouldn't Atkins and PSP suffice?

Is K. L. Kapoor really required because it seems to be a bit advanced?
(+ the strain it puts on the pockets, these coachings are already killing us :()

Thanks for the wonderful blog!

1. When will you be publishing similar strategy for Physics?

2. So, you've listed around 40 books for chemistry. Do we need to buy all these? Kindly trim down the list and suggest us which are essential ones to buy. They are very costly. Not everyone can afford all the books you mentioned.

@kishorekumar:
You can get Clayden, Mcmurry (books + solutions), Schaums and Atkins on torrent.

@kishorekumar...
Its very difficult to trim down the list and suggest only a few books that are required....but u must buy Atkins, Silbey, PSP,Mcmurry, Pine, Jagdamba Singh and Jaya Singh etc...

sir
do i really need coaching to get good score in chemistry
i need your suggestion in this area.

Abhijeet Agrawal said...

Hi Nitish...it is not important that u take coaching or not..what is most important is that whether u have command over the subject or not...even if u can have command over subject then it is well and good...any ways there is hardly any good coaching for Chemistry...for god sake please do not join Motivation....I have given u all the books and topic wise detail..if u follow tht u will be able to cover syllabus in a comprehensive manner....

@ Sanjay Meena...It is good that u are confident enough in Chemistry Paper-1...regarding paper-2 of Chemistry, you may follow the books that i have mentioned in my blog under the topic " Strategy for Chemistry Paper-2"...Chemistry paper-2 is having no defined syllabus so u will have to give an extra effort in this paper....u shall have to prepare keeping 2004, 2005 and 2006 in mind....

Dear Sir,

There are two book for physical chemistry by PSP
1. Principles of physical Chemistry
2. Elements of physical chemistry

Which one of the two books, you have mentioned in your blog.

Unknown said...

Hello Mr. Abhijeet

First of all, I would like to say that you're blog is awesome! and the information provided here is indispensable to any student preparing for CSE.

I am a 3rd year undergraduate doing my integrated masters in Chemistry from IIT(BHU), Varanasi. I would be appearing in CSE 2015 with chemistry as my optional subject. I would like to ask you ine thing regarding the number of books tha you've mentioned.

I suppose that many books would have overlapping content in various topics and buying these books would not be a wise choice from an economical point of view especially for someone from a not so well-off family like me.
Also I prefer to read a hard copy than an e-book as it is a lot easy on my eyes.

What i would like you to tell me is which books should I buy in Hardcopies of and which books can i have in an e-book format?
It would be of great help to me if you could clear my confusion in this area.

I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Regards
Sameer

INDIA-BANGLADESH RELATIONS

India and Bangladesh, neighbors for 4,000 kilometers, share a strong bond from their joint fight for independence, especially during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. This history turned into a solid partnership involving culture, economy, and diplomacy. Recent efforts like the Maitree Express and Integrated Check Post show growing economic teamwork. Agreements like the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty highlight joint commitment to resource sustainability. Despite challenges, the India-Bangladesh relationship remains strong, supporting stability and progress in South Asia.
