Chemistry Paper-2 revealed

Some of you have been asking about how to prepare for Chemistry Paper-2...well the only method to prepare is to practice, practice and practice....if you think that paper-2 can be prepared in a short time frame then it is not possible....only method is to practice questions of paper-2 at least for 1.5 hrs everyday (keep the solution manual with you so that in case of any difficulties that can be consulted)....start with one book, finish in 20 days and then move to next book...In this way you will develop a problem solving aptitude and will cover a lot of questions so in exam you will find some of the questions from these books....
The following books are very useful for practice (as a lot of questions have been asked from these books in previous year exams of IAS and IFS): the list is tentative, it may vary according to your choice....
(Click on the link to open the book description and to buy it online)

2. Organic Chemistry by McMurry

Well if some one asks that from where will i get these books....some of them are available on internet at http://www.flipkart.com (just type organic chemistry in flipkart.com, you will get almost all the books mentioned above and also more than that, in fact there is no defined book for Chemistry paper-2 and question can come from any book, so it depends on the aspirant that how many books he/she can cover for chemistry paper-2 )..

Most of the above books can be bought in hard copies from the following places
  • Universal Books House, 1697, Nai Sarak, New Delhi, Delhi-06 ,Contact No: 01123261903
  • Agrawal Book Depot, Nai Sarak, New Delhi
  • Jawahar Book Depot, Ber Sarai, Near IIT Delhi, Delhi.
  • Many of the books of Physics and Chemistry are also available on various e-commerce sites like http://www.flipkart.com/ and http://www.infibeam.com/Books/ so one can order them online also and these websites deliver the books at your doorstep....
I have also uploaded some of the above books on a server so u can download them, take printout and read them (no need to buy them if it is costly in the shops) ....Here is the link for the server

Note : There is no shortcut for Chemistry paper-2 so you will have to give more time to it....if u hesitate in buying and reading the books then i can not help.....I had a printer and laptop (so i used to take printout of the relevant chapters and read it accordingly)

P.S: My idea of completeness of preparation of Chemistry paper-2 is that if some one is able to solve Chemistry paper-2 of CSE 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006 and IFS 2007 and IFS 2011 Chemistry paper-2 then he/she is in having good level in paper-2....and he/she may expect a good score in the paper-2 of Chemistry

hi sir
hope u r njoying d new xperience

i will be giving d exam in 2k13 and i m from ISM Dhanbad , i hv kept geography and chemistry as my optionals ... u mentioned somewhere that chemistry takes @ 2 yr serious preparation for this exam , i am a bit in dilemma after reading that .

sir , in what context u mentioned that , actually while preparing for iit jee i had a thorough preparation of chemistry and i find that i have the knowledge of a lot of the chapters , still would it take so long to cover that ?

thanks ....

@ mohit....i do not think that u have seen (i mean studied carefully) the syllabus of IAS Chemistry and all previous year's question papers of IAS and IFS of Chemistry....had u done that u would not have said like that...n for your information most of them who have taken 3-4 attempts to get selected in IAS, were also from different IITs...so if u think that u have already studied all the things while preparing for IIT-JEE exam then its a false notion...
note one point that this exam is much more different than IIT exam....the sooner u realize this, the easier it will be for you to prepare for Civil Services.....Let me tell u one case...one guy from IIT Kanpur , he was JEE Rank-8, he thought that civil services exam is nothing for him. he has already done much more than that...so how much it will take for him to clear this exam with maths and physics...but he did not get interview call even once....IIT Jee Rank-44 of year 1997 was my flatmate in Delhi during preparation, he is my senior from college (he did not get 300 marks in chemistry mains not even once in his all attempts)....The syllabus of chemistry is having only 10-15 percent similarity with that of IIT-JEE exam so better you prepare according to this exam.....
if u can solve all the questions of IAS chemistry paper-2 for the years 2002 to 2006 and IFS papers of 2007 and 2011 with ur JEE knowledge then u need not to prepare more...
n if u think that this exam with science subject is a cake walk then i think u need to rethink....
because u are not the only one who has given IIT-JEE exam and then planning to appear in this exam...
every year out of odd 100 aspirants who appear with chemistry as an optional, alleast 60% of them are IITians....

@manish aryan..

It is not for me to decide about what is sufficient for you...you people are better judge for yourselves...what is sufficient or not ,depends on ur level of preparation, ur strategy and ur comfort level on the subject matter...as far as i am concerned, i used to read from these notes only, and after that i never used to get read the books....if u ask me these notes are too much, from the current level of UPSC...If you master them then i think you may get very high marks....
Regarding Chemistry paper-2, i would like to say that i used to refer a lot of books apart from the notes....

mohit said...

thanks sir for your reply

sir , wouldn't it be a better idea then to go for an optional that takes less time than chemistry ...
plz guide me , i want to go for chemistry but seeing it so exhaustive i am unable to decide ...

Abhijeet Agrawal said...

@ mohit....you only were saying that u already know most of the topics, since u had prepared thoroughly during ur JEE exams.....so why u are finding it difficult now...
and if you have such a low conviction in urself then i would suggest you not to take chemistry optional and take some so called light optional like pub ad, sociology, psychology etc...
because science really requires much much more commitment, dedication and hard work, in the context when selection rate is low and no guidance is available...
so u have two ways, one is choosing chemistry which is difficult, requires much more labor, no guidance, cut throat competition within a small group ...another is choosing some arts optional where you will get guidance, coaching and a lot of people appear there...
I had clarity in my mind...i m having very poor writing skill and i was wiling to devote even 3-4 years for the preparation, without taking up the job...i did not take up a job, stayed in Delhi for 4 and half year after graduation, without taking a job...so i could manage with both the science subjects...

thanks a lot sir for your reply ...
it is surely going to affect my future strategies ...

thanks again :)

Abhijeet Sir

I am preparing for civil services with chemistry optional. I have done M.Sc in Chemistry from IIT Delhi.
The sort of analysis you gave is too much to comprehend for a non chemistry fellow, even I am perplexed to see such a gigantic follow through of chemistry. Please lessen my query, that is this much required for me too. I have good command of paper 2 but some topics of paper 1 needs to be covered with depth. Seeing the depth of syllabus and the extent of questions asked in previous years I find deart of time to solve whole paper in 3 hours...how u maintain that crux....Kindly suffice this...

INDIA-BANGLADESH RELATIONS

India and Bangladesh, neighbors for 4,000 kilometers, share a strong bond from their joint fight for independence, especially during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. This history turned into a solid partnership involving culture, economy, and diplomacy. Recent efforts like the Maitree Express and Integrated Check Post show growing economic teamwork. Agreements like the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty highlight joint commitment to resource sustainability. Despite challenges, the India-Bangladesh relationship remains strong, supporting stability and progress in South Asia.
